Well, that's right, there are no hills in Kalgoorlie!! It's flatter than flat. So how do we get airborne?
The Goldfields Dustdevils generally use groundtowing techniques. This involves using a "pay-out" winch (i.e. a drum with a really long rope) tied to the pilot and hang glider. We use a vehicle with gauges (to monitor tension in the rope) and communication system for the driver and pilot. Once the pilot has attained sufficient altitude (and hopefully in a thermal) they then release from the rope, thermal up and enjoy the flight!
